what is e waste

So what is E Waste? Also known as electronic and electrical waste, it refers to old equipment coming to the end of it’s useful life. That doesn’t mean that this type of waste is completely redundant however, much of it can be reused or recycled.

The WEEE Directive explains how all of this type of waste needs to be dealt with, it’s simply not acceptable for it to go straight to landfill. You can find out more about the WEEE Directive here. Do be assured, that Recycling Your IT have all the necessary insurance, certifications and licenses to be able to deal with E Waste correctly.

What does E Waste Include?

Loosely termed, it refers to any household consumer or business electronic or electrical equipment that is end of life. So anything with a plug on it could be included. We deal with businesses in the main and have well established processes for collecting, sorting, recycling and reusing all types of e waste. So this could include old computers, laptops, printers, photocopiers, specific industry equipment, projectors and much much more.

How can I reduce the amount of waste in my business?

Whilst our company is here to properly deal with waste, we are of course always looking o help businesses reduce the amount of electronic and electrical waste they produce. There are some ways to do this.

  • Firstly, when looking at purchasing new equipment, taking a slightly longer view may mean that you don’t need to replace it quite so soon. Spending a little extra now, could save you a lot more in the longer term.
  • Secondly, properly maintaining equipment will help to extend it’s life and as a result, reduce the amount of E Waste you produce. This could mean regular software updates, proper cleaning and more. Your IT department or outsourced company should be able to advise you on this depending on the type of electronic equipment you have.
  • Lastly, explore the option of refurbishment or upgrading your equipment from the outset. You may be able to purchase external hard drives for example if needing additional space. It’s something that is worth further consideration before deciding to replace.
